Path to Become a PIAA Official

Below is the pathway for you to become a basketball official
in the Central PA Basketball Officials Association
(CPBOA)

1st Step - Qualify to referee recreation games

     • Take IAABO Course and Exam ($50) - IAABO Course Materials
     • Become IAABO member ($45 – includes required insurance)
     • Become CPBOA member – recommended - CPBOA - New Officials ($45)
     • Obtain your child abuse and background clearances (~$100)
     • Purchase 2 recreation jerseys (~$60)On court training provided
     • Submit your availability to the assignor

Milestone: You are Ready to Officiate Games!!! (see below)

2nd Step - Qualify to referee PIAA games – Become PIAA Official

     • Become PIAA member ($45)
     • Pass the PIAA Examination test ($30)
     • Become CPBOA member – mandatory - CPBOA - New Officials ($45)
     • Purchase uniform (~$100)
     • Submit your availability to the assignor

You are Ready to Officiate Games!!!

     • You will be assigned a mentor from the CPBOA chapter
     • You will submit your availability to the assignor to referee recreation games
     • Assignor will assign games to get you started
            ° Typically start with younger boys/girls recreation games
            ° Set of recreations games assigned only on a day you established as being available
            ° You will earn approximately $25 to $35 a game. Typically 2 to 4 rec games per game assignment.
                    • Your initial investment will be quickly paid off after you referee a few sets of game assignments.
